Greg Barclay - Director

Greg was a founding partner of Claymore in 1998. He graduated in law from Canterbury University and has a post-graduate business qualification from the University of Auckland.

Greg has a general commercial practice with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions and corporate and structured financing (including debt and equity raising). He also deals with SME’s including new investment, project commercialization, venture capital and franchising. He has also had a long involvement in the business of sport and large events and is recognized as a leading specialist in this area.

As well as being a partner with Claymore Greg is also a past or present director of some high profile New Zealand corporate or sporting entities including Rugby Sales LP (Hospitality New Zealand), Northern Districts Cricket and NZX listed Smartpay Limited. He is currently chairman of the Pacific Forest Products Group (the largest log and export marketing company in New Zealand) and Experience Group (a leading sports and event management company).

Greg is honorary solicitor to the Canadian Trade Consulate and the Canada New Zealand Business Association. He is also a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

James Doughty - Director

James and his team joined Claymore Partners Limited in 2009. James founded James Doughty Commercial Lawyers in 2004 after ten years working with top New Zealand and international law firms Kensington Swan (New Zealand), Clifford Chance (Dubai) and Dickson Minto (Edinburgh). James has law and commerce degrees from the University of Otago.

James has a commercial practice providing advice to a cross-section of companies, SME’s and sporting bodies. James provides practical and effective advice across all areas of commercial law, including mergers & acquisitions, commercial contracts, project & product commercialization, shareholder / director issues and commercial dispute resolution. James also advises a number of clients involved in the property sector, both New Zealand and offshore based.  

James is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors and is a director on the Board of the Museum of Transport & Technology (MOTAT) in his Westmere / Western Springs area. Outside of work James enjoys keeping fit & healthy with triathlons, marathons, free diving & swimming.

Ben Langdon - Director

Ben joined Claymore in 2006 after ten years working with top New Zealand and international law firms and companies including Russell McVeagh (NZ), Linklaters (UK), and British Airways (UK).  Ben has law and commerce degrees from Victoria University in Wellington.

Ben has a general corporate and commercial practice with particular focus and experience in the areas of:

  • Public company
  • Securities
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • Corporate law
  • Company structuring; and
  • Shareholders’ Agreements

Ben has acted for large FTSE-100 and NZX50 corporates as well as SMEs and start-ups across a broad range of industry sectors.

Outside of work Ben enjoys the ocean, travelling, a variety of social sports and indulging in good food and drinks with family and friends.

John Seton - Consultant

John holds a Bachelor of Laws from Victoria University of Wellington and a Master of Laws with Honours from the University of Auckland. He is admitted as:

  • a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales (inactive)
  • an attorney at law in the State of California (inactive)
  • a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand
John is a former Asia 2000 Fellow, past chairman of the Vietnam / New Zealand business council and is a member of, and has been admitted as an accredited director by, the New Zealand Institute of Directors.

After practicing as a solicitor then general counsel, John established and managed a number of public companies. In 1998 he established the Claymore partnership with Greg Barclay.

John has practiced in the areas of corporate, commercial, technology and property law both in New Zealand and overseas. He has experience both as counsel and client in:

  • project assessment
  • structuring and financing
  • joint ventures
  • project and product commercialisation/licensing
  • initial public offerings
  • corporate restructuring
  • takeovers and mergers
  • corporate and project fundraising (both debt and equity), purchases and sales
John is a present or past director of a number of public companies in New Zealand, Australia and Canada. He is a director of TSX listed Olympus Pacific Minerals Inc. and ASX listed Manhattan Corporation Limited. He was also the former chairman of Summit Resources Ltd when it was taken over in a A$1.2b hostile transaction.

James Ryan - Lawyer

James practices in the areas of commercial and corporate law. He holds a BCom/LLB with a major in finance at the University of Auckland and was admitted as a barrister & solicitor in 2007.

James provides a practical approach to help facilitate commercial transactions or, alternatively, resolve commercial disputes. His priority is to quickly gain an in-depth knowledge of his client's business to enable him to offer the best possible advice for their circumstances.

During his time at Claymore he has practiced in all areas of commercial and corporate law, including sales and purchases of businesses and companies, financing, securities, intellectual property, consumer protection, franchising and licensing, media law and dispute resolution.

Outside of the office, James enjoys competitive games of squash and all outdoor sports and activities.

Wade Turner - Lawyer

Wade joined the Claymore team in March 2008. He graduated from the University of Auckland with an LLB and a BA majoring in Spanish. During his studies he attended both the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso in Chile and the University of Arizona in the USA as an exchange student.

Wade practices in all areas of corporate and commercial law, including corporate structuring and governance, business and company sales and acquisitions, securities, financing and drafting commercial contracts, agreements and terms of trade.  Wade also has experience in intellectual property and employment law.

Wade’s spare time is spent with family and friends.  He plays football and enjoys all sports and movies.

Lauren Anderson - Lawyer

Lauren joined the Claymore team in July 2010. She graduated from the University of Otago with an LLB, BCom (Economics and Finance) and BSc (Biochemistry). She also graduated from the University of Auckland with a Commercial LLM with first class honours and won the Gaze Burt Postgraduate Franchise Law Prize for top student in Franchising Law. During her undergraduate studies she attended Bocconi University School of Economics in Milan as an exchange student.

Lauren practices in the areas of corporate and commercial law, assisting the team with corporate structure and governance, compliance, intellectual property, business sales and acquisitions, and drafting commercial contracts and agreements.

Lauren’s interests outside of work include socialising, travelling, hockey, snowboarding and wakeboarding.

Julie Watts - Registered Legal Executive

Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives.

Julie joined Claymore in 1999 and is a senior member of our team providing private and commercial clients with:

  • legal services relating to domestic and commercial conveyancing
  • advice on property and business transactions, subdivisions, trusts and related issues
  • business transactions, trusts and related issues
After qualifying as a legal executive in 1997, Julie studied for a further four years and completed the newly created Diploma in Legal Executive Studies through Waikato University Law School. Specialist subjects included:

  • land law
  • property law
  • commercial transactions

Before Claymore, she had worked in a variety of large, medium and small law firms. She has also held roles in both the private and tertiary education sectors.
